Okay, here is WoGE 177. No Schott Rule. First to locate and describe the geology posts the next WoGE. Bonus points for geography and petrology.

I've found the location, but except the name of the region I know next to nothing about this specific place there. :-(

So hopefully someone with more knowledge shows up.

In the meantime, I try to read up on it. So in case this WoGE lingers for too long, I eventually should be able to post a solution…

BTW, doesn't blogger.com no longer allow posting comments without either a Google account or OpenID, i.e. just by giving a name and e-mail address?

I am not familiar with the posting limits, but if anyone has a solution they can email me at infracanis@gmail.com. Sounds like Effjot is in the lead but as yet a dark horse could come from behind, anyone?

I know a bit about the region in general. (I don't want to spell it out, but “beer guild” mountains may serve as a hint ;-) ) However I still didn't find out what's special about this particular spot. :-(

I'm afraid that WoGE has fallen a bit out of favour, as so long nothing has happened here. My anagrammatic hint also didn't help anybody to solve the puzzle. :-(

The location shows a part of the Blude Ridge Mountains, at 36°20'N 81°34'W, around the city Jefferson in northwest North Carolina.

This area consists of the Ashe Metamorphic Suite and Tallulah Falls Formation – mainly amphibolite and gneiss from the Late Proterozoic. Major tectonic events that influenced the Blue Ridge Mountains by folding and thrusting were the Taconian (closure of the Iapetus ocean in the Silurian) and Alleghenian (formation of Pangea in the late Paleozoic) orogneses. In the Mesozoic, the Appalachians had been mostly eroded, and only in the Cenzoic the current mountain range has been formed by uplift and erosion.

Soils derived from the mafic rocks in the area shown here are relatively basic and gave rise to distinct ecosystems (e.g. fens), so several parts have been protected: see this overview.

Bravo. WoGE 178 is yours to post, Effjot. This is the area that I grew up. There is some very pretty wilderness there, such as the fens you mentioned.

i'm about to travel a bit, so you'll have to wait a few days for the new WoGE. I'll post the link here before Christmas, however.

WoGE #178 is up at my blog.

In fact, is online already since yesterday 20:00 CET, but my current internet connection is quite shaky, and I realised only now that my comment here didn't make it through. Sorry for the delayed announcment.
